Any big city will bust you via camera for running red lights, but my hometown of Chicago is thinking about taking it one further and scanning every car going by for up to date insurance.

This would totally screw me if/when I go back and get in my car because I have no insurance!!

So you know, it’s completely irrelevant if you had the hands at 10&2, doing the speed limit and not running reds. They want to bust em all!!! The proposed system would exploit both existing stoplight cameras and general security cameras to scan your plate and hand it over to the InsureNet database. If InsureNet discovered that you were lacking insurance, you’d receive a $300-$500 ticket in the mail.

The system is anticipated to raise yearly earnings “well in excess” of $100 million (possibly even double that figure or more), with InsureNet taking a modest 30% for their services. Of course, all of this cash would be contingent on uninsured drivers actually paying their fines, which I don’t see happening!!

I didn’t get a chance to Red Bull’s Flugtag event in Chicago on Saturday, but some of my friends did and I’m jealous. For those of you who don’t know what the Red Bull Flugtab event is, it’s where all those crazy flying machines (which aren’t really intended for flight) launched off a 30-foot pad that’s perpendicular to the shoreline, facing into the water. I got peppered with calls about how I would have loved the Nintendudes who crafted a giant NES, Zapper and Duck Hunt duck for flight. To their dismay, vintage gaming gear does double as a flight machine.

The Nintendudes didn’t place in the competition, but who cares, they’re still my boys! But to be fair, the designer of their 250-pound plane had no experience designing planes. As he said, “I didn’t necessarily study the laws of aerodynamics when I designed it. It may fly, but it wasn’t necessarily designed with that in mind.”

That’s what I’m talkin about!
